Fielding to vote against asylum law
Prime Minister John Howard faces a humiliating defeat in the Senate this week, with senator Steve Fielding ending weeks of suspense by declaring he will vote against the controversial, hardline border protection laws.

Apparently the legislation was abandoned because a senator was going to cross the floor and vote against the Government - so Howard withdrew it rather than face defeat.
This makes me suspicious that this was not in fact about border security at all, but more about appeasing the Indonesian Government. Why would you put up something like this only to abandon it in the 11th hour? My guess is because it was only ever a stunt …
