The Effects of Speeding
I am a creative advertising student in the process of generating an advertising campaign as a university project, according to my background information speeding is still a major contributing factor in about one third of serious and fatal crashes, with males aged between 17 - 24 years old being the main demographic.
My question is, with all of the anti-speeding campaigns around why does the message still not get through? Why do people speed? And if they are speeding, what makes them slow down? What works as a deterent? What doesn't work as a deterant?
If the messages out there are not getting through, I want to work out why and what

Sometimes I think by demonising speeding, it actually gives it more street cred. But it seems like a catch-22 situation.

Basic human nature I think: the whole fight/flight adrenaliin thing coupled with - ‘It’ll never happen to me”.
An interesting question would be to find out what people’s attitude to speeding is after they have been in a serious accident.

I think that it is all, or a combination of these things. I am ashamed to admit that even though I have had a serious car accident myself I still speed from time to time (not often or by very much, but speeding is speeding isn’t it?). It may be because it wasn’t speed related or my fault, but you don’t think about these things until you have a ‘near miss’ that puts what you are doing into sharp perspective.
Thanks for your comments so far - it’s a huge help!
