Perth Boating - do we deserve the DULL tag?
What to do after we have bought a new boat at the up and coming Perth International Boat Show - Wednesday 16th of August to Sunday 20th . Roar up and down the Swan - shoot off to Rotto and back. What if we wanted to moor at a convenient jetty near a waterside cafe and have coffee or a drink, or stop in at Rotto for an early morning breakfast, or cruising round to Freo harbour - Hillary's or Mindarie Keys. Truth is, there are no facilities at present to accommodate this.

It is a novel approach to getting people out and about in Perth. But then again, the Swan River is polluted enough as it is, without encouraging more ‘boaties’ onto it just to have a coffee! What kind of proprietor would build and licence a jetty? The cost and time involved would be unrealised since there would be no significant increase in trade.

The Swan river would not be more polluted than it is. The same number of boats would still use the river to get out to sea. The answer is to create facilities at Fremantle, Hillary’s (I understand Hillary’s are shortly upgrading to this), Rottnest and other attractive locations. We won’t stop the current boat craze - just visit the show and see how many boats on display have the “sold” sign on them. Your point relating to the cost of jetties is a well worn argument. I am not referring to permanent fixtures on the Swan - rather floating jetties which can be added to or reduced in area at strategic locations. Besides the added boating attraction, they would have a beneficial effect on lessening the destruction currently done by the wake of passing boats (including ferries) and storm damage
