Polluted seawater sweet enough to drink?

At the weekend large crowds thronged Mahim beach in India to drink seawater, which suddenly seemed to taste sweet. But It is reportedly the most toxic beach in Mumbai.

Apparently most of the slum dwellers use the beach as their toilet. The Indian Government warned people not to drink it, but apparently their warnings were ignored as many people believed the water would cure and cleanse them.

Scientists say the sweetened water is caused by a natural phenomenon known as dilution which causes a drop in salinity. Makes you wonder what may have made the water taste "sweet" then?
