Swans returning to the Swan
A new wedge of cygnets has hatched in the lakes on the South Perth foreshore. The lakes, which were once part of a rubbish dump in the 1960s and were remodeled in the 80s, are a hive of avian activity, including several families of Black Swans.
The Swan River was named by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697 for the black swans but by the 1980s they were a rare sight on the river itself. Now, after a habitat reconstruction and the implementation of the Black Swan Conservation Zone, the swans are back and their numbers are growing yearly.

I have noticed this - not on the SP foreshore (I am never there really) - but catching the bus into town between Canning and Narrows bridge I have started to notice groups of swans on the water’s edge. Its good to see.

I don’t know how it was in the past, but there are lots of swans at Lake Monger and Herdsman Lake too. Very cute
