Open Source WA to close
Open Source WA (OSWA) is set to close its doors on October 31st. OSWA is an initiative set up by the Western Australian Department of Industry and Resources to promote open source software and open standards. It runs the Open Source Demonstration Centre at Technology Park in Bentley as well as provides other government agencies and businesses the opportunity to evaluate and participate in Open Source Software development and the development of open standards.
What is Open Source?
Open Source is a development and distribution method where the software source code is available and permits users to study, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. Examples of software that have been developed using an open source software model are the Linux operating system, Firefox (the web browser), and the Apache web server.
Budget
Open Source WA was expected to continue operating at least until June 2007, however it is now expected to close early due to a lack of budget. Rumours abound that pressure has been applied by Microsoft to close the government-funded operation but the reason being given by the department is that there was no longer room for OSWA in the budget.
An official announcement will be made next week.

Comments
This is a real shame for WA business and education.
The power of open source software is only begining to be realised by many people and this effectively closes the door on that in WA.
What’s happened to the aim of contributing to the public good?
I hope the Microsoft romours aren’t true …
For those not familiar with open source have a look at the OSWA site here . Apologies in advance if my link doesn’t work
Maybe it’s not too late to do something about it.

Ohh, that’s bad!
Today I happened to hear a story about Open source on Triple J’s Hack, though I missed most of it! Something about elections and voting.
Podcast should be up somewhere at http://www.triplej.net.au
(Our internet is being shaped to 72thingys at the moment, so I can’t do hardly anything, arghghh! (Signed up for a higher plan, but won’t come into effect till 1 October, grrrr!))
