Hands off 'pod', Apple warns
The global tug-of-war over rights to the word "pod" has spread to Australian shores with Apple Computer battling to stop a number of local companies laying claim to it. Apple's local activity is part of a wider global strategy to prevent the word "pod" falling into generic usage. I know this has been a source of debate among some local bloggers. It would be interesting to have their thoughts on the subject.

I can’t understand why this has suddenly become a concern. Why didn’t Apple start making their concerns known prior to now since the iPod was released in 2001 after all.
Thing is with all the millions behind them no one is likely to contest that much, money talks when you are facing a lawsuit ….

Google is facing the same issue - people saying “I googled so and so” could make the TM generic and susceptible to deregistration. Google sent letters of warning to news organisations a couple of months ago apparently, asking them not to use google or derivations as a verb.
