Red Bull Air Race flying in to Perth

There’s just six weeks to go until Perth plays host to the 2006 Red Bull Air Race World Series grand finale - the first time the event has been held in Australia.

The world-class competition, to be held on Sunday 19 November, will see 11 of the world’s best pilots from across the globe, navigate a challenging race course in the sky, reaching speeds in excess of 400 kilometres per hour, with acceleration forces of 10G or more.

The pilots perform gate crossings and turning manoeuvres just metres above the Swan River, negotiating 20 metre high inflatable pylons in a pre-determined sequence in the fastest possible time.

Launched in 2003, the Red Bull Air Race became a global event in 2005. The Perth leg will be the last race following stages in international destinations including Abu Dhabi, Barcelona, Berlin, Istanbul, Budapest, Longleat (UK), and San Francisco.

The Perth Race will be held over the Swan River between the Narrows Bridge and the Causeway, with the best vantage point on the South Perth foreshore at Sir James Mitchell Park.

Perth-based Red Bull Air Race project manager, Shani Wood, said this was the first time the Red Bull Air Race has been held in Australia and the event is expected to attract a huge number of local, national and international spectators.

“The Red Bull Air Race is a thrilling and fast-paced event and we are excited that it is coming to Perth,” Ms Wood said.

“The best viewing point will be from Sir James Mitchell Park, South Perth. There will be plenty of atmosphere with commentary, music and big screens along the South Perth foreshore. But don’t expect to have your eyes to the sky for the whole event, as much of the race action will take place just a few metres above the Swan River. “

Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said the State Government had secured the event for Perth over three consecutive years, with the Red Bull Air Race to return in 2007 and 2008.

“We are thrilled Perth has been chosen to host this spectacular event. Investing in international events like this has huge returns for the WA economy and is a great opportunity to showcase WA to the world.” Ms McHale said.

“Adding to the occasion, an Air Festival will be held in support of the Red Bull Air Race on Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November that will include aircraft displays on the ground and in the air.”

Langley Park, Perth’s original airstrip, will be transformed into an airport for the duration of the event. On the morning of Sunday 19 November, a free Paddock Walk will be held from 8.30am. Members of the public will have a chance to meet the pilots, get autographs and see the aircraft first-hand.

And just to be clear: you do not need tickets! It’s free!
(I know a lot of people are wondering about this, I’ve spoken to them, and I can see them searching on google for ‘air race tickets’!)

I’m looking forward to it too, hope the weather will be nice! (I’m quite sure I read that the main event was cancelled in the UK recently due to weather!)
