How To Write A Good Norg Post
What makes good citizen media? I guess that's debatable. But one thing is for certain is that it contains the citizen's voice.
What does voice mean? Well, it's the bleeding through of the authors opinion. Traditional media is soaked with stale words, and really no personality. So what makes new media exciting is that it's real people having a conversation.
So, in my opinion, a great post to PerthNorg should include a little snippet of the author's personality. There's nothing more boring that only a link to someone elses website.
So Norgies, lets show old media how the new folk report on news.
Anyone else have other tips?

Hi Rich
I’m not sure whether you’re looking for suggestions about the whole site and its construction - but as a newie to this business, I’ve got the front to make a couple of suggestions:
It would be good if there was a ‘preview’ function for comments - I’m hesitant to use HTML while I’m not sure that I’ll achieve the desired effect.
Also - I think it would be good if as soon as a comment was posted, that thread was bumped up to the top of the list. As long as a topic is attracting comment and response, it will stay to the forefront, as interest wanes, it will drop back down the list.
It is a shame when you’ve responded to a thread to realize that unless someone actually searches the archives, they may never know that a comments has been posted, possibly answering, or in response to questions etc. My feeling is that good or important stuff is swept away in a relentless tide of new items - some of them of not much consequence and as you say, many of which are just links to some other site, without much else added.
Another way to address this is a “most recently added comments” list of topic titles.
Comments should always be displayed sequentially in the order in which they were received to maintain the continuity or sense of the discussion. It also allows for a bit of dry humour through considered juxtaposition of ideas or turns of phrase etc. If someone wants to specifically respond to comments made in someone elses post, they can use the quote function.
Otherwise, I appreciate the opportunitiues this site offers and think the layout is pleasing to the eye and easy to use.
Well done and thank you to all involved in PerthNorg!

Hi Peter
From my experience on the norg I think the vote ranking takes precedence, and then after that the time it was posted.
Democracy has its cons - but overall I think it works!

Hi Peter,
The preview suggestion is a good one and I will look into what we can do on that end. The other way of addressing the problem would be to have some of the buttons we have for filing a story that make it eassier to create links etc. without having any html knowledge.
Your point about comments making the thread (I like the word story) remain at the top also got me thinking. It could be the case that people are not using their vote button on a story - so if you’re guilty, do it!
But another way of intergrating yor suggestion with the site could be to have all the votes on the comments account for the total vote. That way comments will push the story vote up and it will remain at the top. Let me know how this sounds to everyone.
I think if people used the reply to this comment button, comments would remain in order, and I’m noticing more people using it every day. But again, any other thoughts on this?
Thanks for your feedback and hope to see you round the norg…

I suppose the old school would draw a line between reporting and editorial - though that was old school.
Its only a matter of time before the community will see the opportunity.
yes…i think that rhymes.

Spot on Rich. The word “I” is not a dirty one in new media.
I’m probably an offender myself, but like everyone else I’m learning.

I think ‘linking’ is an important part of new media. And with that I mean linking to several different ’sources’ (if they exist) or just related stuff.
And this goes for the ‘link’ articles, and the ‘original’ articles/stories.
And of course I agree that there should be more original stories, it’s just that they take more time to write!
I do think it might be a good idea to have the comments go towards the total count.
And maybe switch off the voting on the comments, because that’s one thing that gets them out of order… And yes, I do like the comments to be in order too

Simone - you raise an important point about the value in links. Because it is still media chosen by Cit Js - and it’s the voted on by the community.
