I'm looking forward to seeing how many the organisers estimate attended, and I'm eager for next year to come around, as they're already claiming it'll be bigger and better.

I think I heard about 300,000 spectators - it sure as hell felt like it from where I was standing along the South Perth foreshore.

How many are usually at the Skyworks on Aus Day? I think it was the same or more….
Anyway…. of all the days to be sick, I was it yesterday. But even after throwing up in the morning(sorry!), I went anyway, though sat down and saw nothing half the time, and left early. I slept from 2pm to 8am this morning, ha ha! Apparently Pascal took good photos and video though!
I liked how they had several big screens and the commentary, it would have become boring (for me) otherwise.
And I have a feeling a lot of people didn’t realise how low the planes would be flying. If you were sitting down behind the main row of people who were all standing up, you wouldn’t have been able to see very much at all.
I’ll definetly go again next year, mainly because I couldn’t really enjoy it this year!

How do they estimate the crowd numbers anyway? I have always wondered. Anyone know?

The police were estimating crowd numbers and I think Skyshow gets about 400,000 spectators.

Somehow my previous reply has been “lost in the post”! Or are Victorians not allowed to post on your Norg, even if they are exiled sandgropers?
Anyhoo, I found that the modern method for crowd size estimation was to take aerial photographs, then group areas of similar crowd density, then count heads in random samples of each crowd density. It takes a while to do which is why the first estimates are totally unreliable and usually reflect bias in the reporter.
Closed arenas such as football stadia can get accurate counts at the turnstiles.

As long as there are crowd photos in the promotional material, the organisers wont care how many people turn up. I would imagine the event was staged for a television audience (was it 10m?), and to sell Perth to the tourist market.
Saying that, 200,000 is a pretty impressive effort. It will be interesting to see if this is a sustainable number because events like this will never have a wide appeal with spectators, because most people are unable to ‘connect’ with the competitors.
