If the Labor Party really wants and needs a new style of leader, why on earth wouldn’t they put Julia Gillard in the top job? Or is it that she already sees that Kevin Rudd is unlikely to win the next election, and then she will have a tilt at the leadership after the election loss, have 3 years to cement her position as leader, and then possibly beat Peter Costello at his first contested election as Prime Minister? Maybe Julia does have the smarts. Or are we about to see a new Federal Labor Christmas tradition of ‘Ditching the Leader’ every December?

Given Labor’s internal factional divisions, I don’t think Gillard’s got the numbers to win a leadership ballot. Rudd is very clever but, sadly, suffers from the same disease as Costello - he looks way too smug most of the time! Gillard, by contrast, will probably do a few years as deputy, gain even more popular support, and eventually topple Rudd after he fails to win the next election.

I think the ballot should be taken out of the party room and we have it Big Brother Style. We get Gretle to squeeze into a tacky dress and trail on a couple of kilo’s of makup. Have a big show in a shed on the Gold Coast and we will vote who the new leader of the ALP is via SMS.
