Wow - that is a very high statistic. I suppose in all honesty I coud be guilty at times. In the back of my mind I probably equate “speeding” with speed - and travelling 63 km/hr doesn’t register as that.

Or 53 or 43. Part of the problem is the change from one zone to the next. And there are lots of zones in Perth.

But really if 50% of us are speeding (and I would suggest that the figure is closer to 90% speed at times) that can be also seen as it not being as much of a problem as it’s portrayed.

And if it is deemed to be a serious issue by the powers that be then perhaps remove the option to speed from the driver (half of us obviously can’t be trusted) and put governors in every vehicle that are electronically set depending on the zone you’re travelling in.

I personally think that there is no problem with speeding as long as you are a competent driver. I understand that some people out there are terrible drivers but some of us have never had any major or minor accidents. I speed every time I drive and have never had any incidents ever.

The thing is some people have quicker eye to hand co-ordination than others, some have quicker judgments and some people have more attention to detail when driving than others.

I believe there should be some sort of rigorous ability based test that gives you a score depending on your eye to hand co-ordination etc. The score then converted to a percentage. Set all the roads in Perth to much higher speed limits and then that percentage can represent the percentage of the speed limit that you are allowed to travel at.

This will make the roads much safe as the shocking drivers will have to drive slower and us better drivers get to drive at a speed much more suited to our ability.

The only problem with this is trying to enforce it. But thats not for me to worry about. that can be up to the police. :P

Tsk skribe, you mad big government proponent you ;-P

Why don’t we all just wait till Allannah’s got time to drive us to our destination personally? Now there’s a sober and careful example for us all to follow.

Assuming this is still a democracy (and I’ve always seriously doubted that it is) then the pollies and bureaucrats and cops are our servants. And a majority of their bosses are clearly telling them the limits are too low / inappropriate.

If it’s okay to have the limit on some sections of road reduced for limited periods when the danger is higher (40 km/h school zones) then the corollary is that a straight road with a wide central barrier like the freeway justifies a speed well in excess of 100 km/h when the weather is fine, visibility good and the road dry.

But their reaction, of course, is to up the punishments and keep us kowtowing to some high school dropout in a uniform. Time for some civil disobedience - if everyone who copped a ticket they genuinely felt was unfair opted to put their case to a court, the system would grind to a complete halt.
