Cousins fails to mention the 'D' word
In a carefully worded statement, Ben Cousins has decided to not mention the word 'drugs' or drug addiction. Instead he has used the same wording his father used over 5 weeks ago, substance use. Cousins did not mention which substance he was abusing which caused him to need treatement in an overseas rehabilitation centre. Despite calls yesterday from Tom Percy, Cousins did not make any statement regarding his possible suppliers.
He has stated that he will need ongoing treatment and the support of his teamates before returning to the Eagles. He has made a general statement of apology and asked for the media to respect his privacy.
The first step in most recovery programs, including alcoholic and drug anonymous, is to admit exactly what your issue is.

I think it’s a step forward all the same.

Marked, I am sure you are correct in saying that Ben will need to acknowledge exactly what his drug issue is for his recovery. He needs to admit it to himself, and to his family and significant people in his life. He does not need to admit it to me however, and I suspect he does not need to admit it to you. He has a problem. Help is being sought. He is not playing football and he is unlikely to return to the sport for some time yet, if at all.
Public humiliation would no doubt be of great entertainment value, with every news outlet lapping it up and having it on continuous replay for the next week. But will it really help Ben Cousins recover? I doubt it. His recovery does not belong to the general public - it belongs to him. Time to let him get on with it in private.
