Happy 30th Birthday Star Wars

30 years later, Star Wars still rocks.

To celebrate 30 years of Star Wars here are some of the stories doing the rounds at the moment. As the mum of  six year-old and eight year-old boys it is great to share something with them from my childhood, that has become a big part of theirs as well. Though I reckon our lightsabres were never as cool as they are now :( But then again, the original Star Wars were the better ones.

The BBC has also put together a list of 30 facts about Star Wars to celebrate, including:

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, was involved in a car accident following primary shooting. His face was damaged making reshoots impossible. Hamill later said he only broke his nose and reports that his face was reconstructed were wide of the mark.

You can see the full list here.

The biggest birthday bash is Celebration IV in Los Angeles, CA. and for those of us who can't be there you can keep up with the stories on the Official Star Wars blog.

Though I think Wired Magazine may have found the biggest Star Wars nut of all.

\"Meet Steve Sansweet, the ultimate fanboy. Thirty-some years ago, he started collecting all things Star Wars while working as a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal. Now he has a 5,000-square-foot, climate-controlled barn in Northern California packed with goodies from the iconic space saga. His stockpile is rivaled only by the personal stash of George Lucas himself.\"

You can read more here.

And this is taking the Star Wars story a bit too seriously - yes, it is possible - a group of psychologists have been trying to determine just what Anakin's problem is.

There conclusion:

\"Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader, suffers from a controversial mental condition and could use some couch time in a shrink's office, a team of researchers declared this week.

\"He's suffering. And he's suffering from a disorder,\" said Dr. Eric Bui, a psychiatrist in Toulouse, France, who co-wrote a study that diagnosed one of the most villainous and heroic characters in the Star Wars canon as having borderline personality disorder.\"

Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) was not treated well by the sands of time…

The “story” about the car crash is that after making Star Wars he had signed on for “8 is Enough” and realised that TV wasn’t probably the best move for his career. So, unable to get out of the contract he crashed his car, which got him out of the TV show.

Unfortunately his movie career never really went anywhere either.

Probably completely apocryphal, but funny nonetheless.
