Chris Judd has left the Eagles

In a conference called this morning, Judd cited personal reasons such as family and friends as being the reason behind his choice. Judd told reporters the decision had crystallised in his mind this year although he had thought as far back as 2005 that he would probably not take another contract after that one ended. He stated that there was no ill-will between him and the club, that he was honoured to have captained the Eagles, and that his reasons for leaving were not related to football.

His reason for not advising the club earlier was that he didn't want the decision to turn into a \"circus\". Judd said that if he had announced the decision sooner, instead of being asked if he was going, he would have been asked where he was going. Judd also said that he had given the club his best over the season, and acted as if he was going to be there forever rather than \"sitting on his hands\".

Whilst I am disappointed that Chris Judd is leaving West Coast, I wish him all the best.  I think I have been very lucky to have been able to watch a player of his calibre every second week in my home town for the past six years.  We may not see a player with his talent again in the West for some time. I also had the exhilaration of  seeing him captain his team to the premiership, live at the MCG, in what may be a once in a lifetime experience for the both of us.

I find it quite ironic that Football clubs think nothing of trading players to other clubs if they think they can get something better going for their team, regardless of how talented a player is, but then take great offence when the boot is on the other foot, pardon the pun, and a player decides to take control of his own football future.

What I think is a shame is that instead of being remembered as a legend of the West Coast Eagles, possibly their greatest ever player, he is being quite unjustifiably pilloried by fans of his own club, let alone others, and that the crowd that once adored him may well boo him the next time he plays at Subiaco.
Judd has always played with fierce determination and amazing courage, with skills that every footballer can envy. He has conducted himself with honour and integrity at all times on and off the field, and for that alone, is a rarity in the world of football today.

What a shame there hasn’t been an opportunity for WCE members and fans to show their appreciation to Judd for all he has done before he moves on to another club. I, for one, think he deserves our praise and thanks, and I wish him well as he starts the next phase of his football career.
