Traffic chaos as train lines shutdown

To connect the new Mandurah train line to the rest of the Transperth train network, parts of the network have been shut-down for the week.

On the first day of the working week, the road network has been thrown into chaos with both the Mitchell and Kwinana freeways carrying hundreds more cars.

Trains that are running this morning are experiencing delays due to signal issues. Clarkson line trains are improving after a delay was caused on the line by some 'tweaking' that was required. Midland and Armadale line trains were only running every second train.

Delays are expected for the rest of the week on the road network and additional patronage on bus services being put on to cover the train shut-down.

The train network is shut down as follows:

Fremantle Line* - No trains will operate during this period. Bus services will replace trains along the entire Fremantle Line.

Joondalup Line* - On Sunday 7 October, trains will operate between Clarkson and Stirling Stations. Train replacement buses will operate between Stirling and Perth Stations. Last trains are 6pm from Perth and 5.22pm from Clarkson. From Monday 8 October - Saturday 13 October, trains will operate between Clarkson and Leederville Stations on altered frequencies. Train replacement buses will operate between Glendalough and Perth Stations. Some passengers may choose to remain on the train to Leederville and then walk for the remainder of their journey. On Sunday 14 October, trains will operate between Clarkson and Stirling Stations. Train replacement buses will operate between Stirling and Perth Stations.

Midland Line* - Trains will run all stops to a special timetable during peak periods on weekdays.

Armadale/Thornlie Line - On Sunday 7 October, Armadale Line services will operate as 'All Stops' services from 7pm. Replacement bus services will operate between Cannington and Thornlie Stations. Train services will operate as normal from Monday 8 October.

* Subject to change

Other major arterial roads including West Coast Highway and Stirling Highway are also experiencing a large build up of traffic.

The rain this morning didn’t help either.

Indeed it didn’t.

David Hynes from the Public Transport Authority (PTA) apologiesed for this mornings signalling issues.

The PTA is encouraging as many people to car pool as possible to reduce the large amount of congestion the freeways are suffering. City of Perth Parking is offering a reduced price for car poolers ($5 as opposed to $8 for single occupant vehicles) to park there cars at Langley Park and Wellington Square.

Wheres the car pooling website? I’d happily carpool and give people lifts and vice versa, I wouldnt even charge people, too many cars on the road. Everyone buy a bike :)

Great idea. It always strikes me on my way into town how many people are in cars on their own in the morning. An organised car pooling site would be fantastic!

There are quite a few out there already - I was searching a few months ago although they don’t seem to be very popular in WA.

The Car Pool seems to be the most popular site so far..
