So this new test is all about detecting increased levels of the protein beta amyloid.

On 1 Nov 2007 the BBC reported that a team at the Uni of Manchester in the UK believe they have discovered a link between Alzheimer’s and (of all things!) the virus that causes cold sores. They found that a statistically high proportion of Alzheimer’s suffferers were also cold sore sufferers, with beta amyloid being the link. They believe that the presence of the herpes simplex virus (that causes cold sores) in the brain increases levels of the beta amyloid protein, which in turn increases the risk or likelihood of Alzheimer’s.

I’m a cold sore sufferer. Oh joy!
