Community News wants your blog; for nothing
Like to donate your blog traffic to the West Australian Newspaper Group? Neither would I. Mark Boyle, Web Applications Manager of the The Community Newspaper Group has emailed me and others (unsolicited) asking if we would be interested in moving our existing blogs into their community portal site. The main upside for bloggers, he says "is the larger audience that we will be able to attract to our site with our position in the community and our marketing reach." In other words, don't expect to be paid.
The main upside for Community News of course is attracting writers who already have an audience and who are prepared to contribute content for no money. Which will work nicely for them because chances are they will be charging people to advertise there. It gets better:
"In terms of editorial independence, we want bloggers to be able to run their blogs as freely as possible. This means you would have the freedom to post your articles directly to your blog without review by CNG, however we would review all comments for your articles by site users." So not only do you get to provide free content, you get to retain almost all the freedom you currently have!
I replied to Mr Boyle saying thank you but I would rather read another article about Ben Cousins.

Interesting move. I bet some people will take it up though .

Have they not heard of aggregators?

Apparently not.
I find the “editorial independence” on offer an utter joke.
I can see that changing once they have people signed up and advertisers are not liking what some people might have to say on their blogs.

Don’t you think that the advertisers might start complaining if the bloggers all stopped producing content because of interference? Hard to force people to work when you’re not offering them anything in return. I don’t think CN have thought this fully through. They’re trying to herd cats.

Good point

They still have “masthead mentality”. They just don’t realise that bloggers have built up successful audiences on their own and have created their own brands.
They also clearly don’t know how to translate their own brand into the online world - Community News Portal - just sounds so unappealing. Never mind irrelevant.

Yeh, what kind of name is that… They need something catchy… like… Comnewport… that’ll bring the punters in…

I get the feeling someone is starting to feel threatened.

Not from bloggers. The media agencies will use divide and conquer to maintain superiority. Any high traffic blogs remaining will simply be bought. It has happened with every other marketable commodity, so I can’t see blog content being any different. The joys of living in the shadow of multinationals…
