Is linking to news really journalism?

An interesting post today on ReadWriteWeb asking if linking to news sites (which happens here a lot on NORG) is really journalism. My take on it? Who cares if it's journalism or not. Let's bury that old "is blogging journalism" story forever, shall we? The questions shouldn't be "is linking to news on other sites journalism?" but "is linking to news on other sites useful?". The answer for me is YES. Especially if you link to it and provide some element of commentary on top of it. Tell me what YOU think about the story. Do you agree with it? Do you think it's rubbish. And in both cases tell me why. Tell me what YOU think. This is human conversation at it's best.

Some commentary on a link would be nice. A lot of the links on here aren’t useful to me since I read the news anyway. To make the links more useful, I would think the point of CitJ is for the CitJ to report on the story from another point-of-view?

But then, it sounds like I’m comparing it to journalism again.

You can’t have CitJ without the J??

Maybe a little more than 250 characters would be helpful for the link abstract, to give a better summary of the complete article.

Well most newspaper reports are just replays of news items from other sources eg Reuters and other press syndicates. I do think there should be some value add though, e.g. an opinion or  point out inaccuracies.

It is another tough conundrum, the whole is it or is it not journalism. I have taken to linking and using the first paragraph (as most do) as the abstract, and then immediately posting my thoughts/merits/comments in relation to the article linked as the first comment.

Of course linking to a new site and offering an opinion about the story isn’t bloody journalism.  Just as standing around the office cooler and chatting about the day’s events isn’t journalism.  If you want to be a journalist go out and do the hard yards.  Go to the source of the story.  Interpret what you find and then write about it.  Some bloggers do a bloody good job of journalism.  Too many professional journalists do a piss-poor job of it.  Perhaps that’s where you’re getting confused.

Agree. But if it’s interesting, entertains and informs you - does it matter what we call it.

I do a weekly podcast called the 2webcrew and we spoke about this issue on the show. If you are interested check it out here.

It’s interesting that we are having this discussion on the same day that the Norg was one of the first places in the world to report on an earthquake in England that was put together from sources on Twitter. We beat the mainstream media hands down. Is that journalism by your definition then?

Yeah, it does matter.  Especially if all it is a link to a news site and a comment attached saying ‘Hey, look what I found!’.  Journalism keeps sinking to new lows but surely you’re not going to call that journalism, are you?

I guess what we’re seeing is just more of the gradual evolution of news, which is par for the course and an inevitability.

Discussion of news is just editorial, not news - although, I think it is the most interesting part of what ‘linking to news’ has to offer and I think it gives news context.

I’ve been a lurker on here for a while now, never feeling the need to contribute or comment…Until now….

The last time i was on perthnorg was a week ago, and clicking through the articles, it was like a news site with copy and pasted articles from major news sites.  Discussions are minor, additional references, and supporting arguments are poor or non-existent. So Norg is a visit once a fortnight, without any fear of missing any significant or timely news.

Well it’s up to everyone to make it what they want! Let’s quit whinging about the state of news and DO something about it. The difference between us and any other news site is that we CAN do just that.

Sry for the whiney tone. I just don’t have time to compile and write good news, or gossip. :P

Does anybody these days?
