TIVO in Aus almost dead before it comes out??

Well this was definitely on the cards - Tivo is now an old technology, and having it released just by one TV station was never going to work, plus don't get me started on the EPG's... hopefully this FreeView will replace it...

Hang on there! TiVo has been around for a while, yes, but the model that will be introduced here will be a dual-tuner High Definition one. Just about the latest in video recording technology!

TiVo became a verb for a reason - it is still the best interface for a DVR and it really does completely change how you interact with TV. Even better, it is easy to use by mere mortals!

Ever since the Packers got out of Channel 9 the EPG situation has cleared up in Australia - there are commercial EPG (Electronic Program Guides) available now that you can subscribe to (IceTV) - with data for all the free to air channels.

Since Channel 7 are deep into their beta program now for TiVo I really don’t see it going away - I for one am eagerly looking forward to upgrading my TV as soon as possible.

Why would anyone subscribe to a digital program guide when the TV stations never stick to them anway?

Is it possible that ICE TV would actually update in real time so that when TV shows run overtime, you do not get an extra half hour of, say, Big Brother, and lose the back end, usually the climax, of your nightly movie? I am yet to be convinced.

@ozone fair point - the networks do treat us, their viewers, with contempt, leading to high levels of downloads of shows … and shows running off schedule is part of that.

However disk is cheap and only getting cheaper, so (all the more with two tuners) you tend to start recordings a few minutes early and run them up to 15 minutes over time as a matter of course. That catches most of the problems and you’re usually aware of the more egregious offenders (like Big Brother) and can take extra precautions in those cases.

The point is when you record *everything* to disk you start to develop a new perspective, one that is more agreeable to your own timetable and less aware of such strange concepts as ‘prime time.’
