Melbourne Storm Chaos

1points Posted 468 days, 16 hours ago by nichenet

Melbourne was hit by freak weather today, resulting in the deaths of two people and leaving over 200,000 houses without power.

Wind gusts of over 100 km/h struck the City before lunchtime, causing widespread damage and numerous accidents. Sandown Races and the Melbourne Flower Shower were cancelled.

As the wild weather continues, Connex services started to fail, with nearly the entire network offline by the afternoon peak hour. A Connex spokesman recommended that users find alternative means to get home.

At 4:50pm, a dust storm that had been confined to rural areas swept into Melbourne, reducing visiability to under 100m and swamping the city in a thick red dust.

Shortly after 5pm a new weather front hit the city with hail and heavily rain, with some users on Twitter reporting that it was "raining mud."

At 5:45pm Melbourne is a city gridlocked, without public transport, and in large parts dark.

More as it comes to hand.

I was stranded at Avalon airport for hours as the plane couldn’t offload the previous lot of passengers in the cyclonic dust storm. I went outside and was literally blown away. I had to come inside and wait for several hours before being able to board the plane. Not cool.

Here’s a pic of the “brown clouds” that people described seeing yesterday. http://twitpic.com/5py.

I don’t think it was restricted to Melbourne; I was driving home from Sydney to Canberra late last night … got very windy close in to Canberra and a dust storm that in the darkness looked like a tornado coming over the trees … totally freaked me out!

I was flying at the time from Sydney to Perth - not realising there was storm in Melbourne, but definitely noticing how bumpy the flight was. The plane was wiggling like a dog’s tail.

They lost a couple of games and one of their players has signed for Brisbane next year, but I would hardly call it Chaos!!!

Oh, you mean the weather! Sorry thought you were talking about our NRL team!
