Worsfold in conflict with Nisbett and Sumich
John Worsfold has been forced to defend his players after what could only be described as a scathing attack from Club CEO Trevor Nisbett. Nisbett has stated in The Australian Newspaper today that the senior players need to 'pull up their socks' otherwise they will be dropped from the team in favour of the young players. The loss to the Crows was described as a 'reaming' by Trevor, who was less than impressed by the lacklustre showed by the Eagles in their 12 goal defeat.
Worsfold has sought to put Nisbett in his place stating that the CEO should have no influence on the selection of players. This is the second time in two weeks that Worsfold has been forced to comment on Nisbett after being asked on Channel Nine's Footy Classifieds if he was in charge of the team, or the CEO. At the time Worsfold vehemently denied any rift, but Nisbetts unsolicited comments on the topic of team selection have cast doubt on that.
This is not the only comments that Worsfold has been forced to deal with. Assistant coach Peter Sumich came out and gave a veiled swipe at Fremantle Coach Mark Harvey declaring that "the Victorian coach at Fremantle shows no respect to the Eagles". Harvey replied that he has the greatest respect for the Eagles, and also that he deliberately made no comment when the Eagles were enduring all their off field misdemeanors in 2007.
Worsfold has spent the last two days seeking to defuse the comments and distance himself from them, describing them as not his opinion, but Peters own. Peter Sumich applied for the position of Senior Coach at the Dockers last year, but failed to even get an interview.
