person hit by train perth
Last week i was on the train between gosnells and maddington there was a thud.... and the train came to a sudden hault. I initually thought that we had perhaps clipped a car don't know how but when the train driver came on speaker; you could tell by his shaky voice that something had happened! From there we had to wait about 40mins on the train still unaware what/who had been hit; when we were advised that we were to leave the train through the driver's cabin. At this point I leaned against the window and looked towards the back of the train and about 100metres back i could see police in a half cirlce around a white sheet on the ground. Obviously a person had been hit by the train but that day and since I've checked on the internet to find anythig out about it but there is nothing... only if talking to another person that knew or was on the same train as me. This is how I concluded after reading some other 'train incidents' as it's called by TransPerth that it was a suicide otherwise it would have been in the Media.
1. I feel really sorry for the family that had lost their family member.
2. Shows there are more suicides that we know of but why don't we hear more about it too learn how to prevent these days that are filled with such grief, is it only if their famous like the girl off the news it comes out... but what about the general day to day person that you are walking past everyday and don't realise perhaps that they need support/help?
3. I most feel for the train driver's what they go through the guilt horror memories that they would take on for the rest their lives even though it wasn't their fault at all!
I would like to find out wjy that person that day jumped in front of that train I was travelling on that morning.. was it spare of the moment action or had they plot too go out like that, and what was so bad in there life to think like and go through with that? I think if more people was aware perhaps it could really prvent suicide WE DON'T WANT TO END UP LIKE JAPAN AND THEIR SUICIDE RATES; WE NEED TO KNOW MORE AND DON'T HIDE IT AS IF NEVER HAPPENED!

I understand it must be deeply disturbing, and I would suggest phoning Lifeline or Sonshine Careline if you need to talk to someone about it. The reason they don’t report these suicides on the news is precisely so there won’t be copycat incidences. Your intention is noble, but publicity won’t help anyone.

Thanks- that’s the point I was trying to get across, but it’s hard to get it out there when you’re looming at work!

This has less to do than our train system and more to do with the suicide itself. I do not think that Transperth need to mention every suicide that happens on the lines. Nor does concealing the suicides mean higher suicide rates, or does this have anything to do with Japan.
If you’d like to find out “why”, maybe you should go to the family.

What I was meaning that I think this sort of thing happens because perhaps the people that go through with this don’t realise because it’s not very public about having depression - I liked the way they made Charmain’s Dragon death public to open eyes that depression can be serious and for those that think like that to realise before their life is lost - doing that you don’t get a second chance to change your mind. And in Japan they have been having mass suicides that are only now public to try and stop. I just don’t agree with people committing suicide is what I’m getting at and if people was educated more when going through rough times would perhaps not do it!

These aren’t reported in the media because it tends to cause copycat suicides.
Also Japan’s suicide rate is only marginally higher than Australia’s.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. A small number of people end their lives by train each year in WA (the rest of Australia and the world) it rarely gets reported and then usually as a “tragic accident”. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/05/15/2245717.htm?section=entertainment (I don’t know if this incident was accident or suicide but it is an example of the reporting).
Depression and suicide is a major cause of death of young and not so young Australians each year. Easily outstripping illegal drugs, alcohol and motor vehicle accidents combined.
For those who do not suffer depression it is hard to understand. For the 20 to 25% of Australians that do (and that includes me), suicide can seem logical at times. More needs to be done to fight depression in Australia, and I want to thank Charmain Dragon’s family for being so open about her death. It has raise awareness in the community about depression and its’ consequences.
