Is Perth media destined to be the Eastern states add-on … new Fairfax portals with token Perth content arise as locally produced TV takes another plunge. Add this to the fact that ABC is centralising most aspects of new production over east (anyone notice the nightly news sports section is now from Sydney in the Perth broadcast?) and the future of Perth media is looking glum. Hopefully: time for a Norg renaissance?

If Access is an example of Perth media then our TVs are better off with Eastern fare.
The station has been poorly run from the start, remember it has already been liquidated once before - I have a friend that is still owed $30 grand - but because the board is well connected to both sides of politics the govt bailed them out. They even kept the same CEO that got them into the mess to begin with. Now, a few years down the track it’s under threat of liquidation yet again. What’s the bet the pollies come to the rescue again?
In the meantime, producers are being charged $700/half-hour to broadcast their shows and being forced to sign a 3year exclusivity deal where they can’t exhibit their own shows anywhere else and yet Access can onsell the content for a profit (of which the producer sees nothing). If that is Community TV then good riddance.
Communities are better off embracing the interactive web rather than fattening the wallets of a few well-connected broadcasters. It’s cheaper. It allows for a more interactive community. And it’s global.

Scribe, I’ve been a volunteer at Access31 for some years and am very concerned at the recent developments. I can’t seem to find any responsible parties - it’s a ‘company limited by guarantee’ with ‘Persons Carrying on Business (current): None’ according to Consumer and Employment Protection.
You sound as though you have a solid grasp of what’s going on at Access31. Care to share? I’ll be at the meeting next Friday and would welcome any information that will make my vote for or against voluntary liquidation, informed.

Hello Di
There’s a lot of information about the way 31 is run. It’s been uncovered by a consortium who want to take over the licence. They’ve issued a press release which analyses the financial performance and structure of the board but none of the MSM seem interested.
The financial analysis is <a href=”http://home.iprimus.com.au/polemic/Access%2031%20-%20the%20financial%20facts.pdf”>here</a>.
The list of questions arising from that, and the company’s Constitution, is <a href=”http://home.iprimus.com.au/polemic/Access%2031%20-%20the%20questions%20they%20need%20to%20answer.pdf”>here</a>.
And the consortium’s media release is <a href=”http://home.iprimus.com.au/polemic/Media%20Release%20-%20Access%2031%20questions%20need%20answering.pdf”>here</a>.
Please pass these links on to as many other Access 31 members as you can before the meeting.

Hello Di
The consortium who want to be allowed to take over the running of channel 31 have collated and analysed quite a lot of information about Access 31 and released it to the media, but typically the MSM aren’t interested in anything complex.
PerthNorg doesn’t seem to like hyperlinks, so just cut and paste the following into your web browser to read the information.

What a shame, I used to watch this a lot, the Polair show used to be good, and the local racing at barbs, DrivetimeTV I think started here too, where did that go? and all the local music shows too, argh. oh well I haven’t watched it since we got a set top box, I think that’s its downfall and was inevitable.

I’ll agree with you. Since we got our plasma screen with built-in HD tuner (gosh, sounding like a yuppie!), we’ve barely touched the analog mainly because there wasn’t a real need to and partly because my parents didn’t know how to.
Digital TV… the bane of Access 31’s existence!
