I agree that the Taser is not an ideal solution, but after seeing a pt in the ed on “ICE”, beat the **** out of 2 nurses a Doctor and an Ambo, repeatedly warned to stop and lie down by police who rushed to help us. The choice was literally Taser or 9mm. I am always against violence as per my previous comment, but sometimes non-lethal (less likely to be lethal) force is the only option to protect the many.

Anything that can incapacitate someone is always potentially lethal. But doesn’t “torture” imply intent to cause pain for benefit (be it to extract information or for malicious pleasure, for example)? I don’t think subduing a threat falls under that definition. Ensure adequate controls are in place to ward against misuse, certainly, but do not assume that all use is torture.
