Alcohol and young Males, what is it?
I am currently working on the promised article about Emergency Departments, however it is turning into a series of articles. Having said this what has occurred over night forces me to write this brief NEWS article.
In one night in ONE of the 8 major ED's in Perth, victims from 4 seperate single vehicle accidents were brought in with MAJOR injuries. The driver in each case was atleast twice the legal limit. In each case there were lucky ones who walked away and three of the four drivers escaped with only abrasions.
After several brief calls to 4 other ED's this morning there are now at least 11 people from last night with serious, head, neck or pelvic injuries all from drunk drivers all under the age of 25 and all male.
When will the "it won't happen to me" mentality end. As citizens it is now up to us to help stop this, the advertising and the police and the government can only do so much. It is time for us to start telling drunk friends and family to get real and catch a cab or walk.
If anyone in norgdom has any suggestions on how we can stop this tragic waste, love to read your comments

In all seriousness, with all the campaigning that has been done before, what more do you think can be done? The invincible mentality of youth is usually only overcome through painful, often terminal, experience. It’s a lesson you usually only need once. I’d argue that society can only do so much, and ultimately it’s down to personal responsibility, chemically impaired as it may be. However, I do think forcing kids (or hoons) to spend some time in an ED or with a firey or ambo crew would be a lesson they’re not likely to forget. Society gets squeamish about these things, but the best medicine is often the most bitter. Make them watch. Make them see.

It might help with staffing shortages as well. But I think every approach has been tried and you are right - young males - grown ones to- often think they are invincible. Still makes me angry though when I see young guys driving around in hotted up V8 cars - seriously, that’s just asking for trouble.

They could make the time a pre-requisite for getting a driver’s license. I’d call it the Brutal Truth program… Australians don’t have national service in a military sense, but I’m not totally opposed to a compulsory community service program; our ageing population almost guarantees that a lot of services we currently take for granted will go unstaffed in the near future unless radical changes are made to the value our society places on those positions. Why fight fires and scrape up roadkill for peanuts when you can be a marketer?

Cant say I really drink these days, what with riding 71km a day to and from work I just cant afford to have an off morning.
Back in the day I used to live going for beer’s. Now a nice meal out will do the trick everytime
