The future of Fairfax, the Norg and more!
As PerthNorg creator Bronwen Clune provokes the great debate about the future of journalism we had to have in the wake of 550 job loses at Fairfax Media, it seemed timely to see what the media students of tomorrow have to say on the matter. (With LEGO, no less!)

The biggest difference between a journalist and a citJ is that a journalist has worked out how to get paid six figures or more =).

I think one of the most interesting points raised on Bronwen’s blog in this debate was Nick Miller pointing out that Fairfax are trying to treat online journalism more like a sweatshop … ie not the same conditions as other journos. Sadly, this might be part of what the future of paid journalism looks like; it’s also a really good reason to keep thinking about how the Norg(s) and similar entities might become a little more self-sustaining financially!

In the short term that is certainly possible, but only as we move away from the dead tree revenue model. Something will replace it - probably some sort of user pays model - in the medium to long term that will provide big bucks to those that can provide the goods. I don’t see CitJs having anything more than an incidental (and possibly training) role though. Anyone can video or write about something they saw. The true talent of journalism is finding out why it happened. Unfortunately too many mainstream journalists seem to have forgotten that - and some are now beginning to pay the price for shoddy work.
