The Memory of Water by Shelagh Stephenson
Black Swan State Theatre Company presents The Memory of Water
By Shelagh Stephenson
Season: 4 – 19 July 2009
Venue: Playhouse Theatre
Director: Roger Hodgman
Set & Costume Designer: Steve Nolan
Featuring: Geoff Kelso
In the best tradition of British black humour, this award-winning comedy by playwright Shelagh Stephenson proves that death can reveal the absurdity of life. When sisters Mary, Teresa and Catherine gather together at their childhood home on the eve of their mother’s funeral, laughter and tears ensue in equal measure. As each of the sisters struggles to come to grips with their loss, childhood battle lines are unearthed and redrawn, memories are disputed and reinvented, life choices are analysed, and grief gives way to cathartic giggling fits.
Roger Hodgman, multi award-winning Director, and former Artistic Director of Melbourne Theatre Company and the Vancouver Playhouse will direct this wonderful comedy that proves it is never too late to grow up.
“As emotions on stage fluctuated from laughter to tears, so too did reactions in the audience and at times the proverbial pin could have been heard to drop. … A must for all daughters.” The British Theatre Guide
